Sunflowers growing through a skull with an abstract background

Project Name: Sunflowers

For: A birthday gift

Description: This is probably my most abstract painting, simply because of the background. It is definitely my first realistic and abstract painting.

When I started painting I didn’t have any idea of what I should do for the background so I just let my hand flow with what came to me. This is unusual for me as I normally have an idea of how the whole painting will look like when it is finished. I kept telling myself to just trust the process.

I also typically favor realistic paintings and I think this ended up being a good balance of realistic and abstract. I feel that a realistic background would have taken away from the main skull and sunflowers. All in all this painting took me about 5 hours and I love how it turned out!

Materials: Acrylic paints; Canvas
